Historic Guthrie, Oklahoma - Group Planning Information
Guthrie stands on the gentle rolling prairie of Oklahoma once occupied by native Americans and herds of grazing buffalo. After the dust settled from the Great Land Run of April 22, 1889, the rolling prairie was transformed into a sprawling array of crude tents, wagon beds, and rough-hewn wooden buildings overnight.
When the chaos settled, Guthrie emerged as an elegant Victorian city with beautiful architecture, bustling businesses, cultural events and enterprising citizens. Guthrie's beauty and grace befit the optimism as the first state capitol of the new 46th state, OKLAHOMA.
In 1910, a bitter political dispute between the state's first newspaper, The Daily State Capital, and the governor and legislature caused the state capitol to be moved to the larger and faster growing Oklahoma City. A devastating blow to the community at the time, Guthrie lost much of its luster and remained stagnate for most of the century.
During the urban renewal between the 1950s and 1970s, Guthrie followed the examples of others and placed the new, cleaner looking aluminum facades on their downtown buildings. Then, recognizing the uniqueness of the downtown architecture, city leaders took a bold move in the early 1980s and began restoration efforts in an attempt to revitalize the downtown business district.
Ongoing restoration since that time has continued to preserve Guthrie's rich architectural legacy and grandeur. Almost all of the original buildings remain and most of the commercial structures have been restored. Today, Guthrie is the largest contiguous urban historic district on the National Register, extending 1,400 acres and 400 city blocks. [ A living museum of late 19th century architecture, Guthrie was designated in 1999 as a National Landmark Community by the National Park Service, one of seven communities nationwide to have the designation and only the 18th such landmark in Oklahoma. ]
Visitors and residents alike can shop the numerous boutiques, specialty shops and art galleries downtown and see the homes of governors, editors, and lawmen in Guthrie's historic residential area. Jubilant festivals, bronc-busting rodeos, live professional theatres, fascinating museums, historic tours by trolley, professional style golf, exquisite dining, and charming lodging make Guthrie a wonderful place for the whole family.
